Letter to the Editor signed by MPs

Dear David Dinsmore,

We write to lend our support to the No More Page 3 Campaign. As MPs our role is to serve the people, and we cannot remain silent in the presence of a page that limits and misrepresents over half the population.

The largest female image in our most widely-read newspaper is of a semi-naked young woman. She is there purely for the sexual gratification of men. This is unacceptable.

We want to live in a society where the most widely-read newspaper is one that respects women. Instead, The Sun publishes Page 3, which reduces women to objects. It reduces men to objectifiers. And it reduces this country to one that upholds 1970s sexist values. We’re better than this.

Please remove these damaging pictures from your newspaper.

Yours sincerely,

Alliance Party MP

My MP, David Evennett, replied promptly to both of my emails about this, but declined to sign. On 1st Oct 2012, he said he “appreciated the points you have raised and I have noted your views.”
On 25th Oct, he said “I do not buy The Sun Newspaper or support its approach, but I cannot sign petitions or EDMs as I am a member of the government”.

I wrote to my MP Ann Coffey (labour) last year and here was her rather non-committal reply :

    Dear Gill,

Many thanks for your e-mail in support of the recent “No More Page 3” campaign. It is rather depressing that things havn’t progressed, as this was a campaign against the Sun which was running in the 1970s I seem to recall!

However, my main focus at the moment is to try to ensure that young girls are aware of the dangers of sending images of themselves in various states of undress via their mobile phones and text messages. I held an adjournment debate on “sexting” earlier this year, and I attach a copy of the debate in case you would like to read it.

    Best wishes

    ANN COFFEY MP

I did reply to this email, asking for her to reconsider but received no reply.

It is quite simple; force an amendment through parliament in the new press regulations royal charter, no porn allowed in daily newspapers. No daily star either it’s just softcore porn anyway, not a serious source of news and information.

i see a big problem in the discourse: page 3 is by far not the worst page in the sun. would you want your children read this paper without a naked girl on page 3? would you have started a campaign against hitler for the reason that he is not correctly seperating his garbage? the sun is a right-wing conservative racist chauvinist and (of course) sexist tabloid. i would gladly sign the petition ‘no more sun’.

I sometimes shift the papers with girlie photos ( or, rather, their skimpy panties and what they fail to cover) filling the front page, from the lowest range of newsracks, to the top, with the intention of preventing young kids ( girls as well as boys ) from daily seeing the sexually provocative poses which seem to pass for the norm. These images are grotesquely exaggerated and I can hardly believe anyone would want to be seen carrying one of these papers out of the shop!
However, presumably the editors and proprietors believe that these images are necessary in order to sell the papers – do they “set the tone” for the contents overall?

Page 3 and these covers are a blatant abuse of the privilege of a free press, and it’s already half a century since they were seen as dated and in really bad taste. Is it sheer mental laziness, can’t they think of anything else to attract purchasers of their rags?
If for the past half century they’d been printing photos of men in similarly provocative poses, maybe they would have had an even wider readership? Why was this never done? At least it would have shown an unbiassed approach! The fact is, page 3 reveals a continuing denigration of young women as generally available for all spectators to indulge their salacious fantasies. Are these really newspapers? More like old hat, old tat.
