• Students! No More Page 3 needs YOU!

One area where the No More Page 3 campaign is building strength and gaining recognition, unsurprisingly, is with Universities across the UK. Many are voting on whether or not Page 3 in The Sun, and the content of some other newspapers, is inappropriate enough to warrant their removal from the SU shops.

So far Abertay, Aberystwyth, Birmingham City, Bradford, Cambridge, Cardiff, Chester, Durham, Dundee, Edge Hill (Lancashire), Edinburgh, East Anglia, Essex, Hull, Kingston, Leeds, Leeds Met, LSE, Manchester Met, Manchester, Newcastle, University of Nottingham, Oxford Brookes, Sheffield, Stirling, UCL, Warwick, Winchester, York St John and Brasenose College, St Hugh’s College, New College, University College and Teddy Hall, Oxford have all voted in favour of removing the newspaper from their shops.

We want your University to do the same! Could you contact your student union and take it to a vote?

This package has been put together for you to help you access more resources on Page 3 and the Sun.

You may wish to use it in a multitude of ways-

    • As a resource for coursework or presentations
    • To facilitate a debate
    • To promote the campaign within campus or your local area
    • To aid you in setting up a Sun boycott

At the top of the page you will find links to our useful FAQs, T-shirt order page and the petition page as well as more information listed below. We hope we have put things here that you will find helpful but please don’t hesitate to contact us if there is anything else we can help with or if you have any suggestions about additional resources which may be useful to you.

Hi, I’m a student from Surrey currently making a documentary about sexism and the objectification of women in tabloids and I think it would be great experience for me to take part in a No More Page 3 protest. When and where would the next protest be?
    Thank you, Ellie Percival

    Hi All,

I thought you might be interested in the request below, which a colleague received today (I will cover the item in my blog):

A request from Matthew Barbour, The Sun

    Request deadline: 13 May 2013 – 10:00
I’m looking for women who are able to come to a photoshoot in London on Tuesday next week. We are asking them to pose in a nude thong and we want them to rate their naked bodies. We will also be asking a panel of men to look at the pictures and to rate the women’s bodies too. They will have a full read back of the piece and get £400 plus all expenses paid – it’s a piece about body perception, how we’re overly negative on ourselves, with psychologists discussing how we needn’t be, and how to get happier. It’s for the health section, so has that slant (similar to this, it’s about real women: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/woman/health/health/4920312/women-reveal-what-they-like-about-their-breasts.html). Please get back to me asap if you can help. We can plug any relevant charity/medical condition etc. thanks, Matt (contributing editor)

    Thanks,

    @joanna_allan

Surely by denying women their right (if they choose) to pose for Page 3 as a topless model we are actually taking a step backwards for women’s rights in general?

They’re not asking for a ban on soft porn they’re asking for the Sun to stop printing it.

    Hi Lucy,

I’m a postgraduate student at King’s College London who would love to continue the movement and do a protest at King’s.

    How should I get started?

    Best,

    Natalie

Hi Natalie, that’s brilliant, go for it! You might want to start by talking to people about it and guaging their response and see if you can build up a group of like-minded students to support you. Check with the SU the procedures for proposing a motion to boycott the sale of the Sun on campus, and if there is a Feminist Society or Women’s Officer/group ask their advice and get them on board. Let us know if you need any more advice and good luck – let us know!

No More than we are denying a publicans right by insisting the venue in which they sell alcohol is a licensed one and deemed appropriate, no more than we are denying a film with sex and violence – we simply give it a certificate and ensure an appropriate audience.

    Excellently answered Lucy.

This is great stuff – and I am pleased to see that my old uni and my daughters’ are all signed up. I only wish we’d done this years ago when I was a student. My memories of that time are that if you did say anything you got a very patronising response and were somehow marked as a ‘killjoy’.
I wondered if there is anything being done in schools with this campaign?

    Hi Lucy,

I would like to bring this up in the SU in Worcester University, and try to get everyone to vote against selling it in the SU!

But where do you suggest I start?
